Matt and Jenna’s Story

Below is a story I wrote for Apex Anthologies:

Thinking Missional about Deployment

Jenna was left with a decision. “I could make the decision to become bitter and angry and still be miserable, or I could come to Lord and praise him despite our circumstances,” she said. “According to God’s promise, the latter would lead to ‘the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding.’”

“I will never forget the moment Matt told me he was going to deploy,” Jenna said. “It felt like the world had momentarily stopped.”

In only a few short months Matt, a captain in the Air Force, and his wife would be separated by more than 7,000 miles. The deployment: Bagram, Afghanistan.

The news, while hard because of the distance, was poorly timed in another way.

“He found out (about his deployment) the day of our first appointment with the fertility specialist.” Jenna went on to say, “We were just starting to make progress in our long and painful journey towards starting a family. All of a sudden, this came to a crashing halt. I could not make sense of any of it in my head.”
